Would you elect a mayor without hearing what that person has to say about issues you care about? How about a Councilmember? Then why don't we have the same standard for our Delegate to the House of Representatives?
The District of Columbia suffers from a shameful deficit of democracy. It's incumbent upon all of us to not waste what little voice we are allowed. The Delegate position is our formal representation to the federal government. While it is sadly not enough, the office has a significant amount of authority vested in it. District residents should take an energetic role in demanding it be used to further our interests.
